No Frills Folk Club presents Afloat IV
A night of traditional to contemporary Folk Music… from The Folk No Frills - a Brixton band known for their very vibrant and energetic shows. All musicians, all styles welcome. Irish, Welsh, English and Scottish, American old-time, bluegrass and western swing, French, Yiddish, East European, Scandinavian, Greek, Turkish, Balkan and more.
Provincials
Hailing from Hampshire in southern England, Provincial's sound is pooled from the backgrounds of three very different individuals. From their improv beginnings, the group's songs have gradually coalesced into melancholic, explicitly English pop songs, becoming part of the modern English folk music lineage of Vaughan Williams, Incredible String Band, Talk Talk and These New Puritans, whilst also evoking the hushed reverence of Stars of the Lid, and Low. Carol Anderson
Carol Anderson is a London based fiddler from Aberdeenshire, Carol is an energetic and sensitive fiddle player from the North East of Scotland – currently resident in London. When you see her playing you will notice a subtle red tassel on her fiddle. To those in the know, this marks out some of the more exceptional pupils of the legendary fiddle player and tutor Angus Grant. Angus didn’t give these away lightly. There is a spirit in her playing which will captivate you.
Julie Anne McCambridge
The uncanny voice of Julie Anne McCambridge is a force of nature. Not so much the leaf-cutter ants and acorn weevils bit of nature. The big stuff. Lions. Wild boar. The mighty wildebeest. She is a powerful and innovative singer-songwriter who can floor an audience with a whisper and a holler. Website.
Strayaway Child
Strayaway Child is; Maggie Casey (whistles, flute, fiddle and singing) and Johnny B (mandola, mountain dulcimer and singing). They met in the folk session in the greatly missed Grosvenor in Brixton. They discovered that they lived in the same street so it was inevitable that they play more music together. South London musicians for many years, Maggie plays in sessions, folk clubs and the odd ceilidh, and Johnny is a long-standing member of The No Frills Band. Website.
